What is Zamac?
The alloys of zinc with aluminum, magnesium and copper are commercially called Zamac. They are used in industrial process, generally on pressure foundry.
Considering the non-iron alloys used on pressure foundry, the zinc alloys are the most largely used. Besides having excellent physical, mechanic and foundry properties, these alloys can be easily coated by electrodepositing (coppering, nickeling and chroming) or by paintings with inks and glosses.
Its low fusion levels (approximately 385ºC) provide endurance to the mold, enabling the production of large series of cast pieces.
Another quality of the Zamac is its large fluidity, which enables reaching pieces of complex shapes and with thin walls. They cal also be used on gravity casting in permanent or centrifugated casting.
They are easily milled metals. The Zamac alloys are traded in bundles of 77, 112 or 120 ingots and in belted bundles with up to 4 metallic bands – involved in transparent and waterproof material.
The alloys are stored in places protected from the weather inclemency and transported on trucks and flat bed trucks protected through 'roping and sheeting'.
The Zamac 3 and the Zamac 5 alloys comply with the ASTM B 240 rules: 1998. The ZC8C alloy is a product developed by Votorantim Metais and used in centrifuged casting.
